THIRD PROGRESS REVIEW FOR THE ISTAR PROJECT

On May 5th and 6th, the SPIRE PoliMi research Lab, with the collaboration of COMPASS PoliMi Lab, had the opportunity to organize and attend the thrid progress review meeting for the ISTAR project at the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology - Politecnico di Milano.

This collaboration is the result of an agreement between Agenzia Spaziale Italiana and Politecnico di Milano for the scientific-technical support to Aeronautica Militare in the Space Surveillance and Tracking SST field, involving other research institutions as Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Università degli Studi di Padova, and Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione "A. Faedo" (Cnr-Isti).

The covered topics encompass Space Traffic Management, fragmentation analysis, atmospheric re-entry, sensor tasking, telescope image processing and RSO characterisation.

The ASI-ISTAR project, initiated in 2023, is a strategic research initiative which provides technical and scientific support to the Italian Air Force's C-SSA/ISOC by advancing national capabilities in Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST).

Through sensor architecture simulations, satellite fragmentation analysis, and the characterization of resident space objects, the partnership directly contributes to the robust development of Space Traffic Management (STM) frameworks to ensure a safer and more sustainable orbital environment

The meeting featured valuable discussions that strengthened collaboration and clarified interactions between the various project tasks.
