ETHICAL ASPECTS OF RESEARCH IN DUAL-USE TECHNOLOGIES, 2025-2026 EDITION

The Ph.D. course “Ethical Aspects of Research in Dual-Use Technologies” concluded last week after three very intensive days, from January 14 to January 16, 2026. The course is part of the syllabus offered by the Ph.D. School of Politecnico di Milano.
Under the supervision of Professor Pierangelo Masarati, and with the collaboration of Dr. Andrea Barca, the course offers Ph.D. students the opportunity to understand the possible military and security implications of their research. It aims to train them to recognize and address potential ethical dilemmas in a controlled environment, through the analysis of both the technical and legislative aspects of dual-use technologies.
This eight edition featured a seminar by Professor Pierluigi Di Lizia entitled “Dual-use Technologies and Services in Space Engineering”.
The course was attended by approximately 50 students from 12 of the 20 Ph.D. programs offered by the PhD School, confirming the growing awareness and sensitivity at Politecnico di Milano towards issues related to dual-use research.
Speakers:
Pierangelo Masarati is Full Professor at Politecnico di Milano and works in structural dynamics, aeroelasticity, rotorcraft aeromechanics, and multibody dynamics. He has been recently appointed Rector's delegate for Dual-Use Technologies and Research Security.
Pierluigi Di Lizia is Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano and works in space exploration and exploitation.
Andrea Barca is a postdoctoral researcher with a PhD in Philosophy of Law.
