FOUR ASTEROIDS NAMED AFTER DART LAB RESEARCHERS

A prestigious international recognition highlights the scientific contributions of four researchers from DAER’s DART Lab to the study and exploration of asteroids and the Solar System.

During the latest edition of the Asteroids, Meteors and Comets conference, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially named four asteroids after Professor Francesco Topputo, Iosto Fodde, Carmine Giordano, and Paolo Panicucci, members of the DART Lab (Deep-space Astrodynamics Research and Technology Laboratory) at the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology (DAER), Politecnico di Milano..

This decision represents an important recognition of the four researchers' scientific contributions to the exploration of asteroids and small bodies in the Solar System, a field in which the DART Lab has been actively involved for years through research activities, the development of innovative technologies, and the design of space missions.

Having an asteroid named after an individual is one of the most prestigious honors bestowed by the international astronomical community. Names are approved by the Working Group for Small Body Nomenclature of the International Astronomical Union and are assigned to individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge.
